What is Pella Tulip Time?

Tulip Time is an annual festival in Pella, Iowa that celebrates its Dutch Heritage with tulips and a range of other Dutch-influenced activities. The tulips can be seen in parks and gardens around the town, including at the Scholte House Gardens, the home built by Hendrik Peter Scholte, who was the Dutch founder of the town.

Other Dutch-themed activities include a Parade of Provinces – a Dutch costume show and the Dutch Family Singers who perform traditional songs and dances. Even the local high school orchestra puts on a concert of Dutch songs!

If that’s not enough Dutch heritage activity for you there is also a fireworks display and performances from local bands.

Need to know

The event itself is free, but tickets can be purchased for grandstand seating at the parade as well as the museum and city tours.

Did You Know?

The first Pella Tulip Time in 1935 was planned with just two weeks’ notice – and didn’t feature any tulips! A local cabinet-maker made 125 four-foot wooden tulips and a Tulip Committee was formed to plant a whopping 85,000 tulips for the following year!

We wish to thank community member Sovereign Photography for this beautiful shot of the event.
