What is the Kentucky Derby?
The Kentucky Derby is an exciting horse race held every in Louisville, Kentucky. Traditionally it always takes place on the first Saturday in May and rounds off the two-week-long Kentucky Derby Festival.
20 horses take part in the race which as a distance of around 1.25 miles (approximately 2,000 meters). Along with the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes, the Kentucky Derby makes up American Thoroughbred racing’s coveted Triple Crown.
Horse racing isn't the only attraction at the Kentucky Derby. Men and women pull out all the stops when it comes to fashion at the race with many wearing fancy pastel colored suits, dresses and flamboyant head pieces.
