What is George Town Festival?

The George Town Festival was founded in 2010 to celebrate the city’s designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has since then taken place every July. This vibrant festival celebrates the diversity and rich cultural heritage of the city, with it's theme of ‘A Festival for Everyone.’

The festival is a week long and sees this already trendy and artsy city of George Town come alive with theatre, music and dance performances along with a huge range of visual art installations and exhibitions. The festival features an impressive range of local talent as well as performers and artists from greater Malaysia and beyond.

Perched strategically on the historic shipping routes through the Straits of Malacca, George Town, jointly with the city of Melaka, received the coveted UNESCO World Heritage status in recognition of their unique multicultural heritage. For 500 years these cities were at the center of trade between east and west and the impact of that long period of cultural exchange can be felt and seen to this day.
