What is Chinese New Year in Beijing?

Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival or Lunar New Year, is the grandest festival in China.

It is a week-long public holiday that people spend feasting, celebrating a new year and spending time with their families. Traditions and superstitions revolve around saying goodbye to the old year and ushering in good luck and prosperity for the coming year.

Like most Chinese cities during this special festival, Beijing is decorated with red lanterns and has dazzling firework displays, massive banquets and parades.  Traditional dragon and lion dances are also performed to ward off the evil spirits.

For hundreds of years, Beijing's daily life has included temple fairs. They are one of the most important celebrations of Chinese New Year.
